About Us
Sewing Gem started in Brisbane Australia out of Gemma's garage back in 2017 with a focus on cool and beautiful prints for kids clothes and a few useful sewing tools. Since then the store has grown quite a bit with a strong focus on the best sewing tools and Indie patterns. As any one of Sewing Gem's customers will attest Gemma is a sewing tool fiend and has a need to stock (yes, need) all the latest sewing gadgets and tools in the store. Gemma wanted to share her passion back in the U.K where she grew up so in 2021 we set out to expand across the pond.
Sewing Gem UK
Sewing Gem UK is run by me, Becky and my Mum Roberta.
My mum taught me how to sew when I was 5 years old on my grandmother's hand turned Singer, I didn't get the chance to meet her but I always loved the connection of sewing on the machine she made clothes for my mum on.
When I was 17, I started working in a tailoring and alterations shop, before I went on to study Costume Construction at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. After years working as a freelance costume-maker and designer, I landed my dream job - making and reviving costumes for the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Where I still work as a Senior Technician.
In 2020 while on Furlough being without a fully equipped workroom made me appreciate how essential the right kit and haberdashery are and most importantly how valuable the camaraderie and creativity shared amongst friends and colleagues is.
I know so many sewers who, must be searching for lovely quality sewing tools too as well and wanting to have the support network of like minded sewers!
Starting Sewing Gem UK is the chance for me to use all my professional skills and knowledge to help people bring a professional sewing workroom right into their home and studios and share the sewing camaraderie online!
